Futureproof or written on vellum? David Worlock reports from the PPA Publishing+ conference
So off I went to the PPA ( Periodical Publishers Association ) conference , arriving unexpectedly early and thus catching the Minister of Culture trying manfully – and succeeding brilliantly – in saying nothing of consequence to the future of magazines for 20 minutes. I have encountered Ed Vaizey before – as pleasant and affable a politician as one would wish to meet – but he made it clear that everything significant was decided , as he put it , ” above his payscale ” so there was no real point in asking him a question at all.

What's wrong with B2B publishing? We cling to classifieds and events when we need real innovation
Since 2008 we have been living, in traditional B2B markets, with the reality of the network. We have all talked increasingly confidently about the irreversible decline of advertising in print, and our inability to replace it in a satisfactory way online. But when will B2B media companies realise the real benefits of virtual communities and events?

DMS13: Media businesses as enablers, readers as publishers
Two days out at the Digital Media Strategies conference (organized by TheMediaBriefing.com team) was a breath of fresh air. For one thing Rory Brown and Neil Thackray, and their editor, Patrick Smith, have now tuned the programme and its marketing to the point where they get 220 delegates in one place with a great sense of mission.

Omniscience and Omerta
“Although we have long made limited customer relationship data available to our journalists, we realize this was a mistake. ” Doctoroff went on to note that Bloomberg terminals are also equipped with cameras that can see through the clothing of female subscribers, but he stressed that images collected by the cameras are not shared with ‘those nerds in the News division.

Spring in the Ku’damm
Spring came late to Berlin this year , as elsewhere in Europe. But with the Spargel festival just starting , the trees in bud on Unter den Linden , the German courts ruling that you cannot re-sell an ebook and the German Government’s technical advisors indicating that government-funded research must be Open Access , it was clearly time to be there for the 10th annual Publishers’ Forum.

The Play’s the Thing…
…by which to test the seriousness of the industry. ( Yes , I went to the new Hamlet production at Stratford last week ). And this week’s play , acted out to a packed house of industry watchers and market analysts , has been the seduction and vanquishment of the fair Mendeley by all-powerful Elsevier , so rudely forced.

Editorial Views and Viewers
So thanks so much for all the comments on the last piece. I am now truly troubled and confused. Some of you seem to think that the regional press never will re-create itself , so it must be left to innovators to innovate and old brands to die. Yet those who are deeply involved in the regional press claim that the tools and utilities required for innovative services are simply not available.

Local news is shrinking but the real business opportunities are just beginning
We need to take a measure of the agony of the regional press in the UK at this point: it will never get worse. 2013 will be the Annus Horribilis – or Mirabilis. If it does succeed in crossing the Chasm into digital profit, then it will be much smaller, with better margins, lower debt and worse cashflow.

Automation, gamification and customer service: Is marketing losing its human touch?
Was it the sandwich or the service that sparked the bad dream? And does it matter? Marketing automation and gamification tools are changing the way we are encouraged to carry out tasks and interact with brands. But are these services becoming too inhuman, asks David Worlock.

Mosaic Method and SOCMINT
The network makes writing more accessible , in that it reduces the barriers to acquisition while similarly diminishing the challenges to contributions. This is why I am celebrating three new books by old friends already this year. Jim McGinty started it with a powerful drama called ” Right to Kill ; A Brooklyn Tale” ( read my review on Amazon ).

MOOCs Mood
I have been rumbling silently about MOOCs for a long time , but it was only when I read a report on the Domain of One’s Own experiments that I realised what it was about Massive Open Online Courses that gave me a sense of disquiet. MOOCs have had huge publicity in the last six months , and as always we seem to be convinced that a single initiative is going to Save education / universities / educational content / publishing / Life on Earth.

After the Newspaper , the Russians
Well , I think I have waited long enough ! When Ashley Highfield became CEO of Johnston Press in the UK I had hoped that the next generation newspaper would pop out as speedily as the BBC iPlayer did during his digital reign at the BBC. But time is moving on and I feel that I must file at least an interim report on this front.
