Summary
Tor Books is one of two imprints of Tom Doherty Associates LLC, based in New York City. It is noted for its science fiction and fantasy titles. Tom Doherty Associates also publishes mainstream fiction, mystery, and occasional military history titles under its Forge imprint. The company was founded by Tom Doherty in 1980, and sold to St. Martin's Press in 1986. Along with St. Martin's Press, Henry Holt, and Farrar, Straus and Giroux, it is now part of the Holtzbrinck group, now known as Macmillan Publishers.In March 2006, Holtzbrinck forced Tor to stop making its books available as eBooks via Webscriptions (since renamed to Baen Ebooks) because of concerns regarding the lack of Digital rights management (DRM).

Macmillan’s Tor/Forge will launch DRM-free digital bookstore this summer
Macmillan’s science-fiction/fantasy imprint, Tor/Forge, will launch a DRM-free digital bookstore this summer. Fritz Foy, Macmillan’s EVP of digital publishing, made the announcement at the Publishers Launch BEA conference today. Tor recently announced that it is removing DRM from all its titles.
