In the last in our series of end-of-year questions to publishers and executives we admire, we ask Dan Blank, founder of We Grow Media, to tackle our festive quiz.
What was good and bad about 2010 for you and your business?
My career took a dramatic shift in 2010: my decade-long run with Reed Business Information Loading... (RBI) came to an end. I then started my own company, WeGrowMedia.com, where I consult with publishers about online marketing and content, and train writers to help serve their communities online.
What will be the biggest media trend in 2011?
The biggest media trend? Acceptance. Acceptance that digital media is here to stay, that social media is a powerful way for companies to reach their markets, and that no one will solve the revenue problem for you - you must innovate from within.
Was 2010 finally the year of mobile or is it still to come?
I look around, and everyone is staring at tiny screens while doing other activities. This, coupled with the launch of the iPad, certainly made 2010 the year where if you didn't take mobile seriously in the past, then you had better do so now.
Is print dead?
Nope. Print is amazing. We merely need to accept that it isn't everything.
Apple: friend of foe of the content/news business
Apple has enabled innovation that no one else could have pulled off and is providing revenue models for industries that had a hard time creating it themselves, namely digital music and entertainment, and digital publishing.
